1st Construction Career Day a Success!!
Hundreds of high school juniors and seniors, accompanied by their school and career guidance counselors from across the Cape, attended the event to learn about job opportunities in residential construction and related fields. The Career Day definitely broadened teachers’ and guidance counselors’ understanding of the industry and the wide range of career opportunities available.
“The residential construction industry is one of the primary economic drivers on the Cape, and this labor shortage is a vital issue for our members and for home owners.” said Christine Duren, Executive Officer of the HBRACC. “Members are finding they have to schedule projects all the way into 2017 or worst case scenario, turn down work due to the lack of available help. We’re holding this event to spur interest in the design and construction fields, and to help create, fill, and keep jobs here on the Cape.”
HBA members representing a variety of residential construction-related careers provided hands-on activities and demonstrations, answered questions and talked with students. Career fields represented at the event were architecture, building, carpentry, electrical, environmental, engineering, financial services, masonry, plumbing, real estate, smart home technology and many more.
Some student comments:
"We were able to see jobs we don't normally see."
"They explained what they do, how they do it, how it gets planned out, how they do a task (AutoCAD), and everything that goes into building."
"We've never seen anything like that before."
"It makes you more aware."
"Keep doing it! It was cool and fun."
Some teacher comments:
"Maybe more of the hands on stations." (Referring to the roofing, masonry, window installation, and door installation.) "They were particularly interested in landscape architecture. Students thought it was an interesting career."
"The framer mentioned that he wanted to do an activity showing how to use math when laying out rafters. The students said they would like to see it."
The event was held on Thursday, October 15, 2015 from 9:00 am – 1:00 pm at the Cape Cod Fairgrounds in East Falmouth.
